Staff Accountant

The Choice Schools Associates Finance Team is looking to expand its detailed, accurate and fun finance team! We're looking for a highly motivated, self-starter that thrives in a fast-paced, highly creative environment. This position will be a critical member of the Finance Team, acting as the linchpin in supporting the central office finance team.

This position's responsibilities will include (but are not limited to) compiling and reviewing financial information, reconciling bank accounts on a monthly basis, preparing financial paperwork, assisting with payroll & benefits processing, providing Board support through financial statements, and supporting year-end audits. You will also be required to perform general administrative tasks.

Work is performed in accordance with Governmental Accounting Standards Board guidance, federal and state regulatory agencies, and other statutory requirements pertaining to public school academies in Michigan.

ESSENTIAL PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist in the preparation and review of monthly and quarterly financial reports by performing all the necessary month-end close processes for multiple schools on a timely basis
  • Assist in preparing final annual reports and all interim reports
  • Prepare monthly bank reconciliations
  • Work with school vendors to reconcile any discrepancies in payments
  • Enter invoices to the proper GL account and review school bookkeeper entries
  • Assist the school finance team in the bi-weekly check printing process
  • Meet deadlines for all month-end reporting
  • Prepare grant reconciliations and supporting documents
  • Record all necessary monthly invoices and adjusting journal entries
  • Stays informed of current educational trends and programs for school finance
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities
  • Complies with and supports school regulations and policies.
  • Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Controller and school finance team

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to work effectively with others
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Must be able to multi-task
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and accounting software
  • Ability to understand basic internal controls and company policies as it relates to the financial statements (i.e. account reconciliations, detailed support, proper approvals, etc.)
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize workload
  • Demonstrates effective judgment and a high level of integrity

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field, CPA or pursuing CPA preferred
  • Knowledge in school or government accounting preferred
  • Knowledge of GAAP
  • Minimum of two years of accounting experience

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

This position will be based out of our central office located in Wyoming, MI. The work environment is in a standard office or home office setting, including standard office equipment (fax, copier, phone, computer, 10-key, etc.). Therefore, the noise level in the work environment is usually low. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to sit, use hands for fine manipulation, handle, and reach with hands and arms using a keyboard and video display terminal. The employee is required to walk, stand, stoop, kneel, and crouch. The employee must regularly lift and move up to 10 pounds and occasionally up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.

TRAVEL:

Some travel is required. Mileage to be reimbursed at the Federal rate if personal vehicle when used. Rental car available upon request provided personal driving history is satisfactory.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Twelve months, At-Will, exempt level position. Wage established by the Chief Executive Officer of Choice Schools Associates LLC. Includes benefits as outlined in the Choice Schools Associates LLC Employee Manual
